The New India Assurance Company Limited reported its second consecutive quarterly loss for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, as a motor third-party claims provision and underwriting pressures outweighed premium growth.

The unaudited standalone net loss was ₹12.67 billion (₹1,267.04 crore), compared with a ₹632.5 million (₹63.25 crore) profit in the year-earlier September quarter. The insurer had posted a ₹2.57 billion (₹257 crore) loss for the quarter ended June 30. The company’s results filing said its board approved the results Oct. 30.

Gross written premium increased 5.14% year over year to ₹110.83 billion (₹11,083.43 crore) from ₹105.41 billion (₹10,541.17 crore). Management attributed the limited growth mainly to a steep fall in property rates. The combined ratio rose to 156.20%, from 139.77% a year earlier.

Major property risks and flooding across Gujarat, North India and North East India weighed on that segment, the company said. It also cited adverse experience in aviation, motor and health.

New India Assurance booked an additional ₹7.15 billion (₹715.41 crore) provision for motor third-party claims after a June 11, 2026, Supreme Court of India ruling on compensation for homemakers. The court set a composite ₹30,000 monthly amount under the ‘loss of domestic care’ head when all three identified heads apply; for a homemaker without conventional monetary income, it serves as a basic minimum monthly income. It directed cumulative revisions of 10% every three years.

On a consolidated basis, the company reported a ₹12.60 billion (₹1,260.01 crore) loss, compared with a ₹201 million (₹20.10 crore) profit in the year-earlier quarter. Auditors issued a qualified conclusion in their limited review, citing balances still being reconciled, compiled or confirmed. They said the effect of pending adjustments could not be determined.
