CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 07, 2016 -- HIFU Prostate Services, LLC and Urology of Indiana have partnered to offer high intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, to men with prostate cancer in Indianapolis, Indiana. Urology of Indiana has over 30 urologists serving the greater Indianapolis area and is the oldest continuously operating urology practice in the country tracing its roots to 1887. HIFU Prostate Services is the largest and most experienced team of HIFU providers in the US with 10 centers.
David Hollensbe, MD and John Scott, MD from Urology of Indiana, will perform the outpatient HIFU treatments at The Surgery Center of Carmel.
HIFU is a non-surgical, radiation-free, outpatient procedure that uses focused sound waves to heat and destroy tissue in the prostate. In October 2015, the FDA cleared HIFU for prostate tissue ablation. HIFU offers prostate cancer patients an effective treatment while preserving important quality of life functions such as potency and continence, which are often compromised with surgery and radiation.
“We are excited to add HIFU as one of our tools for treating prostate cancer. This technology has the ability to change the treatment landscape of prostate cancer offering men an effective treatment without the complications normally associated with other therapies,” said Dr. Scott. “Additionally, by partnering with HIFU Prostate Services, we are confident that our HIFU patients will get the absolute best possible care all the way through the treatment process. Their nurses, technicians and administrative staff are the most experienced in the country when it comes to offering HIFU so we know they will be well taken care of by our staff and theirs.”
Unlike surgery and radiation that treat the entire prostate gland, HIFU can be used as a focal therapy only treating the cancerous portion of the prostate. Similar to breast cancer care and the transition from full removal to a lumpectomy, Sonablate HIFU allows physicians to customize the treatment based on the characteristics of each patient’s individual cancer. This means based on diagnostic information doctors can treat the entire prostate if needed, or only part of the prostate.
“We look forward to working with Urology of Indiana to bring this exciting technology to Indianapolis. Our team at HIFU Prostate Services has over 60 years of combined experience supporting patients and physicians that utilize the Sonablate system,” commented John Linn, chief executive officer, HIFU Prostate Services. “The Sonablate was designed, developed, and built in Indianapolis. Urology of Indiana now offers this hometown technology to the men of Indianapolis.”
“This isn’t the first time Urology of Indiana introduced a new technology to help in the accurate diagnoses and treatment of prostate cancer. Several years ago, we introduced the Artemis 3D Imaging and MRI-guided prostate biopsies. Sonablate HIFU is a perfect complement to this technology because we have the ability to fuse those MRI images directly into the Sonablate HIFU software so we can see exactly where the cancer is while we are planning HIFU treatment,” said Britt McDermott, chief executive officer, Urology of Indiana.
