India’s Nifty 50 advanced 0.51% on Oct. 30 even as mid- and small-cap indexes fell, underscoring how a capitalization-weighted benchmark can move against much of the wider market.
NSE Indices’ Oct. 30 daily snapshot put the Nifty at 23,053.10 after a 116.35-point advance. The Sensex rose 308.49 points, or 0.42%, to 74,459.53.
The gains were uneven across sectors. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.93% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 lost 1.85%, according to NSE Indices’ snapshot. NDTV Profit reported declines in the Nifty Auto, FMCG, Metals, Realty, PSU Bank and Oil & Gas indexes. ITI Securities reported a 2.32% rise in Nifty IT, while NDTV Profit said Nifty Pharma advanced 1.55%.
Mint reported an intraday count of 1,351 BSE-listed shares advancing and 2,828 declining while the Nifty stood at 23,014.50. The count was an intraday snapshot, rather than a tally of shares at the close.
NSE Indices weights the Nifty 50 by free-float market capitalization. Its Oct. 30 factsheet assigned Financial Services a 37.13% share of the index and Information Technology 8.80%. Companies with larger weights have more sway over the benchmark, so gains among a few large constituents can outweigh losses across a greater number of smaller-weight shares. Investors with different holdings can see returns that diverge from the index.
Gaurav Bhandari, CEO of Monarch Networth Capital Limited, told NDTV Profit that “the worst of the FII selling pressure appears behind us.” NDTV Profit also reported that 213 companies were scheduled to announce second-quarter FY27 results on Oct. 30, adding company-level earnings to the day’s market developments.
