Nigeria’s new relief plan has conflicting terms: Bernard Doro, Nigeria’s minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction, described a ₦50,000 monthly benefit, while the ministry portal calls it a one-off grant.
The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction announced the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) on Oct. 30. Doro linked the program to global food inflation and higher prices for essential goods. He said it would be reviewed as living costs change, with recipients notified before adjustments, but gave no review date.
The ministry portal says beneficiaries are selected using the National Social Register and verified identity records. Payments are phased across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Selected recipients receive an SMS and must consent before funds are credited to a mobile wallet. The ministry says people do not need to apply or pay a fee, and lists ALAT, MoMo PSB and NairaGram as payment providers.
The portal describes the ₦50,000 as a one-time wallet grant, a schedule also given in Moniepoint’s NERSI FAQ. The descriptions conflict with Doro’s monthly account, and the sources reviewed do not explain the discrepancy.
