Nigeria’s agriculture ministry and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) are disputing responsibility for food safety in open markets, BusinessDay reported Oct. 23.

NAFDAC says it regulates pesticides and processed foods but lacks direct authority over raw agricultural produce, which it says it still monitors in markets; the agency previously reported pesticide residues in Nigerian beans.

BusinessDay began a five-part food-safety series on Oct. 20, with its opening installment examining food markets.
