A Nigerian presidential working group submitted the draft National Policing Bill (2026) and 29 consequential amendment bills for legal review, advancing a proposal for federal and state policing.

In an Oct. 20 statement, the State House said the group sent the drafts to the Federal Ministry of Justice on Oct. 19. The policing bill seeks to give the proposed Federal Police Service and State Police Services a legal foundation.

State Houses of Assembly are separately considering a 2026 bill to amend Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. The working group said that consideration must be completed before the policing bill goes to the National Assembly.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the president’s chief of staff and chair of the working group, said the ministry would check the drafts against legislative standards and existing laws. The ministry is expected to return validated drafts by Oct. 30. The group will then review them and present them to the president.
