The Global Methane Hub (GMH) found that 89% of Nigerian respondents support methane cuts, while 76% said such steps would improve their opinion of policymakers.
The 89% result was 17 percentage points above the 72% recorded in the hub’s 2024 survey wave. In the 2026 poll, support across sector questions was 88% for cuts tied to waste, 84% for food and agriculture, and 88% for energy. GMH’s release separately reported 89% support for broader climate action.
Water quality led the poll’s “very concerned” responses at 67%, followed by flooding from storms or rising waters at 60%. Poor air quality registered 55%, while climate change registered 53%.
In questions about responsibility and solutions, respondents most often identified large oil and gas companies as responsible for climate change. They gave national governments the leading role in limiting its effects.
The survey also asked about methane awareness. Sixty-four percent said they were familiar with methane, while 39% said it has a negative impact on the global climate. The report treats these as answers to separate questions.
Global Strategy Group collected online responses from Aug. 3 to Aug. 25, 2026, across 18 countries. The survey included adults 18 and older with internet access, and its weighting accounted for age, gender, geography and education. The results report lists about 700 responses per country and a Nigeria margin of error of ±3.7 percentage points.
GMH says methane accounts for roughly 30% of warming since preindustrial times and has more than 80 times the warming impact of carbon dioxide over 20 years. The poll measured respondents’ views; its results do not establish what policies governments will adopt.
