Nordstrom plans to reopen a downtown San Francisco retail location with a 51,500-square-foot Nordstrom Rack in fall 2027, returning to Union Square after its two downtown stores closed in 2023. The Seattle-based retailer announced the plan Oct. 15, identifying the site as 2 Stockton Street and saying Invesco Real Estate owns and manages the building.

Nordstrom said the store is expected to provide online order pickup and accept returns. Rack merchandise spans clothing, footwear, beauty, accessories and home goods, the company said, with markdowns reaching as much as 70%.

The San Francisco Standard reported that Nordstrom’s department store and downtown Rack outlet had closed in 2023. Earlier that year, SFGATE reported the company’s plans to close both locations. The planned Rack store would restore a larger downtown presence; Nordstrom reopened in the city in October 2025 with Nordstrom Local Fillmore, a 1,750-square-foot service hub in Pacific Heights. That location offers pickup, returns and alterations.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie described the planned store as “another sign of the growing confidence in San Francisco.” Nordstrom did not provide independent retail or foot-traffic figures alongside the announcement to measure that assessment.

The company said its California operations include 21 Nordstrom stores, 70 Rack stores and six Nordstrom Locals, supporting more than 11,200 jobs statewide. Nordstrom has characterized Rack as its largest source of new customers and the San Francisco location as an expansion of its Bay Area footprint. It did not disclose a hiring target, investment amount or sales forecast for the new store. The announced opening window is fall 2027; the company has not given an exact date.
