North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea off its eastern coast on Monday, October 12, as military tensions with South Korea continued to intensify following a series of weapons tests and border incidents.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed that the missiles were launched at approximately 9:20 a.m. local time (0020 GMT) from an area near Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

Japan’s coast guard also reported detecting two unidentified projectiles suspected to be ballistic missiles. According to Japanese authorities, both projectiles appeared to have already landed by the time the initial announcement was made.

The latest North Korean missile launch comes amid growing security concerns on the Korean Peninsula, where recent military activities have heightened tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated further following a landmine explosion near their shared border last month that injured three South Korean soldiers.

South Korean officials accused North Korea of planting the explosives and demanded an official apology. However, Pyongyang rejected the allegations and instead accused Seoul of engaging in provocative actions.

The dispute has added to an already volatile security environment, with both countries demonstrating their military capabilities through increasingly frequent weapons tests.

Last week, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung personally oversaw the country's first test launch of a hypersonic missile. The event marked an unusual public demonstration of advanced missile technology attended by a sitting South Korean president.

North Korea, meanwhile, has continued expanding its missile testing activities throughout 2026.

Pyongyang previously conducted a ballistic missile launch on October 3. Following that test, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, described the launch as a test of an intermediate-range strategic missile.

According to available reports, North Korea has conducted missile tests on more than 10 occasions this year, highlighting its continued focus on developing and demonstrating military capabilities.

Monday's ballistic missile launches underscore the persistent security challenges facing the Korean Peninsula as disputes over military activities, border security and weapons development continue to strain relations between the two neighboring countries.
