BALTIMORE, Aug. 31, 2017 -- The Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) will begin working on Purple Line Light Rail following a groundbreaking ceremony on August 28th in Landover Hills, MD. The hour-long ceremony initiated the start of construction on the line.
The $2.2 billion project will include the construction of 21 above ground stations and light rail lines in the Bethesda, Silver Spring, Langley Park, College Park and New Carrollton areas of Maryland.
Elected officials who attended the event included: U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao; Maryland State Governor Larry Hogan; and Congressman Anthony Brown of Maryland’s 4th Legislative District. The NRCC was represented by John Barber, Team Lead and Council Representative of Local 177; Council Representative Henrik Sorensen of Local 177; and Willy Grusholt of Local 179.
“This is a monumental project in the DC Metro Area and we are pleased to see this project begin after years of strategic planning,” said Robert Naughton, Tri-State Regional Manager. “This project will be constructed by highly skilled union carpenters and it will be a long-lasting, quality structure that will greatly benefit commuters and members of the general public in Maryland and the DC Metro Area.
The rail line has an expected completion date of 2021.
