Nucor Corporation plans to invest $60 million in its utility structures facility in Trinity, near Decatur, Alabama, projecting 60 jobs as U.S. utilities invest in transmission and distribution.
The company announced Tuesday that the project is subject to regulatory and other approvals. It expects the proposed positions to pay average annual wages above $87,000; that estimate applies to the new jobs. The work would increase production capacity, add laydown space and create a dedicated area for galvanizing inspections. The plan pairs new manufacturing jobs with added output for utilities that buy steel poles and other grid structures.
The facility began operating in September 2025 beside Nucor Steel Decatur in Morgan County. Nucor announced plans to build the Alabama plant in 2023. It formed its Towers & Structures business in 2022 through its acquisition of Summit Utility Structures LLC.
Nucor Chair and Chief Executive Officer Leon Topalian linked the expansion to grid investment, saying utilities are spending to “strengthen and modernize the nation’s power grid.” Nucor has cited investment in power transmission and distribution as a driver of demand for its products.
The Alabama project is part of a broader expansion of the business. Nucor says it has opened an Indiana facility and is building a fourth site in Utah. On Oct. 8, the company announced a separate $105 million expansion in Crawfordsville, Indiana, projected to add 100 jobs. Nucor cited utility investment in transmission and distribution as a reason for both the Alabama and Indiana projects.
Alabama’s governor’s office said the project is eligible for Jobs Act credits and assistance from Alabama Industrial Development Training, but it did not disclose the value of that support. Gov. Kay Ivey said the investment would create “new opportunities for hardworking Alabamians.” Nucor plans to release third-quarter results after the U.S. market closes Monday, Oct. 26, and hold a conference call Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. ET.
