Nvidia is reportedly in discussions to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, a SoftBank Group-backed company developing a major AI data center campus in Ohio for OpenAI.
According to a report by The Information, the potential Nvidia investment is part of broader negotiations involving Nvidia, OpenAI and SB Energy. The discussions also reportedly include plans for Nvidia to provide around $100 billion in credit support for the proposed Ohio data center project.
The move would further expand Nvidia’s role in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence infrastructure market. While Nvidia remains best known as the world’s leading supplier of AI chips and graphics processing units, the company has increasingly become involved in financing and supporting the massive infrastructure required to power advanced AI models.
The planned OpenAI data center campus in Ohio could require significant investment in computing hardware, energy systems and large-scale data center infrastructure. Nvidia’s potential financial backing would help support the development of the facilities while also strengthening its position across the broader AI ecosystem.
SB Energy, which is backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group, is expected to play a key role in developing the project. SoftBank has been actively expanding its involvement in artificial intelligence and related infrastructure as demand for AI computing capacity continues to accelerate worldwide.
The discussions underscore the growing financial scale of the AI industry. Building advanced AI data centers requires billions of dollars in investment, driven by the enormous computing and energy demands of training and operating increasingly sophisticated AI systems.
Nvidia’s potential $3 billion investment in SB Energy, combined with the reported $100 billion credit support discussions, highlights how major technology companies are looking beyond chip production to secure the infrastructure needed for future AI growth.
However, the negotiations are still ongoing, and the final structure, size and terms of any Nvidia investment or credit arrangement could change. Neither the reported investment nor the broader financing plans have been finalized.
If completed, the deal could strengthen the partnership between Nvidia, OpenAI, SoftBank and SB Energy while accelerating the development of large-scale AI data center infrastructure in the United States.
