Checks after a fire at a South Carolina laboratory found no detectable contamination, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said its Savannah River Site (SRS) ended a Site Area Emergency late Wednesday.

A site notification said the alert was declared at 5:39 p.m. local time Wednesday (2139 GMT), after the fire was reported. The notice placed the end of the emergency at 9:45 p.m. local time Wednesday (0145 GMT Thursday).

The fire at Savannah River National Laboratory had been put out by then, the notice said. Radiological surveys recorded no contamination that could be detected. Officials initially said there were no indications the incident had affected areas beyond the site. The notification also said protective measures were lifted and site barricades reopened.

Near Aiken, South Carolina, the Savannah River Site is part of the U.S. weapons complex. SRS says it has contributed to U.S. strategic deterrence for more than three-quarters of a century.
