Oil in Global Economy Series: Saudi Arabia exceeds production cuts

Saudi Arabia’s oil minister Khalid- Al-Falih said that the largest OPEC producer has already exceeded that production cuts target, which just 12 days into the month. On November 30th, Saudi Arabia agreed to an OPEC-wide production cut that would bring down the Kingdom’s production to 10.06 million barrels per day from the then production of 10.624 million barrels per day.

Speaking to the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Falih said he was confident that the deal would return the market to balance more quickly. A total of 25 countries joined either the OPEC or N-OPEC deals, which would see the production being trimmed down by 1.758 million barrels per day by the first half of this year. Despite recent doubts by the market participants, Mr. Falih said that the agreement between the OPEC and N-OPEC would hold saying that if there hadn’t been an intention to keep to the commitments, it would have shown by now.

He didn’t outline any price targets for the participants but added that the three digit prices in earlier years were equally unsustainable as the lower prices of last year and both Saudi Arabia and other countries in Gulf Cooperation Council are looking for moderation in prices and want prices to be supportive of both production and consumption.

The oil price is up in today's trading. WTI is currently at $52.6 per barrel and Brent at $55.6 per barrel.
