Oman’s Public Prosecution warned that online statements targeting other countries, leaders, national symbols or peoples could bring legal action and strain diplomatic ties, Gulf News reported, citing a public advisory.

Gulf News updated its report Oct. 25, saying the warning applies both to material a user posts and to its later circulation. The reported examples include reposting or sharing content, urging others to join in and other actions prohibited by law.

The Public Prosecution called for care in how people express opinions online, particularly on social media, Gulf News said. The outlet reported that people who violate the law may face legal action.
