OpenAI's consumer product lead reportedly put ChatGPT's web-search volume at about one-fifth of Google's on Monday, describing a tally limited to prompts that trigger a search rather than all ChatGPT use.

The product lead said requests for definitions or simple instructions do not count toward the total and did not identify the source of Google's search-volume data.

A separate OpenAI analysis classified 20.2% of sampled messages from individual accounts in September as “Seeking information.” That figure tracks message topics, not how often users ran a web search. EconoTimes' earlier coverage of the analysis notes that the topic measure does not establish ChatGPT's share of Google search activity.
