OpenAI says ChatGPT ads are now available in 89 countries after a 26-country expansion, extending the service’s reach for advertisers and users around the world.
The company said more than 100,000 advertisers had placed campaigns during the slightly more than eight months since ads began. OpenAI announced the latest expansion Oct. 21 but did not provide start dates by country or name every new market. Fourteen additions are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. OpenAI also named Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan, along with Nigeria, Serbia, South Africa and Ukraine.
Businesses in the new markets can work through technology partners or use OpenAI’s Ads Manager. Self-service eligibility depends on where an advertiser’s legal entity is based, according to OpenAI’s Help Center.
OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week and that the expansion gives businesses more ways to reach them. Ads may appear for people using the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free, and that ads are labeled and do not shape ChatGPT’s answers. The company presents advertising as one way to support free and lower-cost access to the service.
In an Aug. 31 announcement, OpenAI said ChatGPT ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days. That figure describes the business’s pace at the time; it does not mean $1 billion in sales had already been recorded over a full year. OpenAI lists advertising alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings and usage-based APIs as parts of its business.
The company said the rollout follows earlier expansions in Europe, Southeast Asia and Taiwan. It plans to develop additional ad formats, buying options and measurement capabilities, with no timetable announced.
