Four people, including three children, were killed in an Oct. 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, and a community member shot the 16-year-old suspect inside the school, officials said.
At an evening briefing, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz identified the children killed as ages 5, 8 and 11. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to St. Charles Bend, he said. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek’s office confirmed the suspect also died.
Police records put the first emergency call at about 12:59 p.m. PDT (3:59 p.m. ET; 19:59 UTC), after a caller reported a man had shot into a car near the school. Reports of gunfire inside the building followed within a minute. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. PDT (4:02 p.m. ET; 20:02 UTC), the records say.
Police said the suspect entered by firing at locked doors. A community member who saw him enter followed him into the building and fired at him, officials said. Police cleared classrooms and sent students by bus to Journey Church to meet their families, while urging the public to stay away from the area.
Kotek’s office said the Oregon Department of Emergency Management was coordinating assistance among state agencies. The Associated Press reported that Bend-La Pine Schools canceled classes, sports and extracurricular activities Friday across its 32 schools.
