Canada says Prime Minister Mark Carney’s official visit to Türkiye, scheduled for Oct. 22-23, is the first bilateral visit to Türkiye by a Canadian prime minister, with economic cooperation and security on the agenda.

Erdoğan welcomed Carney at an official ceremony in Ankara as the leaders began talks; Carney’s itinerary also includes meetings with Turkish business leaders and investors in Istanbul. Its agenda spans energy and mining, climate policy, defense and security, as well as exchanges between people in the two countries. Carney’s wider itinerary runs from Oct. 21 to 24, according to his office.

Head of Communications for Türkiye’s presidency Burhanettin Duran said Türkiye planned to upgrade relations to the level of a strategic partnership and sign agreements in several areas during the visit. He said the leaders were also expected to review bilateral cooperation and regional and global issues.

The visit comes as the two governments pursue free trade talks, as described in earlier EconoTimes coverage of the planned partnership upgrade and trade negotiations. The official visit is scheduled to run through Oct. 23, within Carney’s wider trip through Oct. 24.
