Axios reported Tuesday that the Justice Department is investigating Sylvia over alleged disclosures of classified information about Ukraine and Iran. Citing three people familiar with the matter, the outlet said a court-martial remains possible.

Axios said sources described unauthorized disclosures involving Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Gordon and New York Times reporter Greg Jaffe. A Pentagon investigative report reviewed by the outlet records more extensive contacts with Gordon, including alleged discussions of Ukraine and Iran in 2025 and 2026, and one conversation with Jaffe about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removing other senior military leaders.

Hegseth removed Sylvia last week from his role as director for strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Staff.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Oct. 29 that an inquiry by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations led to personnel action to protect sensitive information. He said the matter had been referred to the Justice Department for possible legal action. Parnell’s statement did not name Sylvia.

The Associated Press reported that Sylvia was under investigation over alleged disclosures related to Iran, Ukraine and other topics, citing an unnamed Pentagon official speaking anonymously.
