PHP’s code review system still depends on experienced people, Executive Director Elizabeth Barron told Reuters, as proposed changes approached twice their year-earlier volume without a matching increase in contributors.
Barron said she is the PHP Foundation’s only full-time staff member. The organization also has 14 contractors, most working part time. She said human judgment remains necessary to assess proposed code and reports of defects.
The PHP Foundation provides financial support to developers. Language proposals are considered through PHP Internals’ independent Request for Comments process, which determines whether changes are adopted.
EconoTimes previously covered the Foundation’s funding pressures around PHP maintenance in a report about delays to a critical security fix. W3Techs reported Oct. 24 that PHP was used by 69.3% of websites where it could identify the server-side programming language; the figure covers only that subset of websites.
