PARIS, Oct. 23 — The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) says one person was killed and five wounded in a Paris-area shooting, as its terrorism investigation examines whether victims were selected on racial, ethnic, national or religious grounds.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu initially reported one death and four wounded. A later PNAT tally raised the number of injured people to five.

An AFP dispatch carried by CNA said police put the start of the shooting at about 4:30 a.m. ET (8:30 UTC) on Oct. 23. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the shooter fired from a vehicle while traveling through Trappes and La Verrière, CNA reported.

The two towns are about 20 kilometers west of Paris. Coignières’ municipal notice said the suspect was arrested there later that morning and nobody was hurt in the town.

Investigators are assessing whether race, ethnicity, nationality or religion played a role in who was attacked, including if those characteristics were only assumed. EconoTimes previously reported the opening of the terrorism probe. The investigation is ongoing.
