Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, setting up a closely watched general election contest against Republican nominee Michele Tafoya.
U.S. media outlets projected Flanagan as the winner of Minnesota’s Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday. The progressive Democrat is seeking the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Tina Smith, who is retiring rather than running for another term.
Flanagan’s victory advances her to the November general election, where she will face Tafoya, a former sports broadcaster who captured the Republican nomination. The matchup between Peggy Flanagan and Michele Tafoya is expected to draw significant attention as both parties compete for the open Minnesota Senate seat.
Flanagan has served as Minnesota’s lieutenant governor and has built a political profile around progressive priorities. Her nomination gives Democrats an experienced statewide officeholder as they seek to retain a seat that has remained under Democratic control during Smith’s tenure.
Tafoya, meanwhile, enters the general election after securing the Republican nomination. Her background in sports broadcasting gives her considerable name recognition as she campaigns to flip the seat for the GOP.
The Minnesota U.S. Senate election will be part of the broader battle for control of Congress in November. Open Senate seats can become especially important in competitive election cycles because neither party benefits from having an incumbent seeking reelection.
