Peter Thiel, a billionaire technology investor and major Republican donor, questioned the U.S. decision to enter the war in Iran and warned that the United States could lose the soft-power contest, Politico reported Thursday.
Politico obtained the audio from a private event on Oct. 12. At the gathering, Thiel said, “I think we should not have done it.” He questioned whether the United States had enough power to keep its position in the conflict, adding, “Maybe we don’t have the hard power.”
In a Nashville lecture held earlier that month as part of a series, Thiel criticized neoconservative policy and U.S. military intervention in the Middle East, Politico reported.
Politico said Thiel continued to support President Donald Trump. It also reported that he warned the International Criminal Court (ICC) could put the administration at risk during the war, describing a possible arrest warrant as a “sword of Damocles hanging over the Trump administration.”
