WXII reported police charged 20-year-old Ziyaire Spinks after a fatal shooting during homecoming weekend at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, where the university then canceled the remaining events.

WXII identified the person killed as 19-year-old Peyton Patterson and said a 22-year-old woman wounded in the same shooting received hospital treatment and was released. The station reported charges of general murder, an assault allegation involving a deadly weapon and intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and felony firearm possession on educational property.

The Associated Press reported that Spinks was held without bond. Its account listed murder and firearm-possession charges but did not mention the assault count.

Chancellor Bonita J. Brown said the campus had two shootings on Nov. 7, with a combined toll of one person killed and three injured. At an early Sunday briefing, Assistant Police Chief Jason Swaim said investigators had only just begun their work. Officials had not determined whether the incidents were connected.

The university said additional law enforcement remained on campus and counseling was available. It canceled the Fourth Quarter event and its participation in WSSU Day at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
