Poland has decided to double investment in its space sector and is seeking closer cooperation with Germany on technologies that Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski considers vital to security, he said Monday.

Reuters reported that Domanski spoke at a joint panel with Germany’s Economy Minister Katherina Reiche. He said Europe lacks some technologies needed for shared security, making sovereign capabilities a priority for investment.

During a discussion of trade competition between China and the United States, Domanski said closer Polish-German ties could improve the countries’ resilience to pressure from abroad. He also argued that national defense depends in part on satellite capacity, saying countries without their own satellites would struggle to protect themselves.

Domanski described the investment as an efficient use of funds serving both security and economic aims. He estimated returns of €6 to €7 for every €1 invested and said Poland sees room for more cooperation with German counterparts.
