Warsaw police detained three people after they climbed the Constitutional Tribunal’s fence on Friday, as officers maintained a presence outside amid protests over its president’s suspension.
Police said the prosecutor general asked officers to give the Tribunal’s security added attention amid the protests. In a separate communication, a judge reported possible threats to judges and staff, cited a risk of public disorder and requested protective measures. Police said officers remained outside the building.
The Associated Press reported that the Tribunal’s website published information about the suspension of President Bogdan Święczkowski, then went offline soon afterward. The news agency said it could not independently verify the official reasons for the suspension.
The Associated Press reported that Tusk’s government came to power in 2023 with a promise to restore judicial independence. The Associated Press has reported that critics in Poland and the European Union accused the former ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), which governed from 2015 to 2023, of exerting political control over key courts.
