Former nuclear sites could gain a new role in AI computing as PreussenElektra and Nvidia assess data center use at locations once built to generate electricity.

PreussenElektra, an E.ON unit, said Oct. 21 that Nvidia was participating in the site evaluation. Past U.S. efforts involving Google, Amazon and Microsoft have included nuclear projects that contemplated increased capacity and a reactor restart.

Separately, Nvidia has projected that its Vera Rubin systems could begin serving workloads in as little as 14 days at prepared data center sites, provided supporting infrastructure is ready. Nvidia has compared that estimate with roughly six months for a conventional deployment. The 14-day deployment target for prepared sites is a projection, not a reported result at an operating facility.
