Qatar linked Iran mediation to de-escalation steps this week amid war-related disruptions to global shipping and oil supplies, with reopening the Strait of Hormuz among Doha’s demands, Reuters reported.

At an Oct. 27 Foreign Ministry briefing, a Qatari spokesperson said mediation required “good intentions.” The spokesperson called for changes in Iran’s conduct toward Arab Gulf states and a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Reuters reported Qatar sent a delegation to Tehran earlier this week to support de-escalation in coordination with the United States. Qatar and Pakistan are mediating between Washington and Tehran as they seek to end the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Reuters said the conflict has disrupted maritime commerce and oil supplies worldwide.

Qatar said Oct. 20 that it was continuing to carry messages between Washington and Tehran while pursuing a diplomatic solution to restore passage through Hormuz, according to EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of the mediation effort.
