Qualcomm Technologies (NASDAQ: QCOM) shares surged 9.5% after the chipmaker announced a multi-generational partnership with Amazon to develop custom silicon and high-speed optical connectivity technology for artificial intelligence data centers.
The agreement strengthens Qualcomm’s push into the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market as cloud providers seek more powerful and energy-efficient computing systems. As part of the partnership, Qualcomm will issue Amazon a warrant allowing it to purchase up to 25 million shares of QCOM common stock, highlighting the companies’ long-term strategic alignment.
Qualcomm and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will collaborate on customized, energy-efficient silicon designed for large-scale AI inference workloads. The companies aim to combine AWS’s cloud infrastructure with Qualcomm’s expertise in high-performance, low-power computing to address growing demand from generative AI applications.
The partnership will also focus on next-generation optical connectivity capable of reaching speeds of up to 1.6 terabits per second. Qualcomm plans to use its advanced SerDes and optical digital signal processing technologies to help AWS handle the rapidly increasing volume of data moving through AI data centers.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said accelerating AI demand will require improvements in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance while improving efficiency. He said Qualcomm intends to leverage decades of experience in power-efficient computing to support the next generation of AI infrastructure.
AWS Vice President Prasad Kalyanaraman said the expanded collaboration builds on the companies’ existing relationship and their shared goal of advancing data center technology.
The agreement extends beyond chips and networking equipment. Qualcomm also plans to increase its use of AWS AI infrastructure, including Amazon Bedrock, for electronic design automation workflows. The company expects the technology to help streamline semiconductor development and significantly reduce chip design cycles.
The Amazon partnership could strengthen Qualcomm’s position beyond its traditional smartphone chip business while giving it greater exposure to booming AI data center spending. The announcement also underscores intensifying competition among semiconductor companies seeking to capture demand for custom AI processors and high-bandwidth connectivity as hyperscale cloud operators expand their infrastructure.
