Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon took office Oct. 21 with 22 ministers, facing a legislature where his Parti Québécois (PQ) needs opposition votes to govern.
Élections Québec currently lists the PQ with 59 of the National Assembly’s 127 seats after the Oct. 5 election. A majority requires 64 seats, putting the party five short on the current tally. Without a majority, the government needs support from other parties to pass legislation and survive confidence votes.
CityNews reported that the cabinet has 22 ministers plus St-Pierre Plamondon, for 23 members in all. St-Pierre Plamondon said that was six fewer ministers than the previous cabinet, according to CityNews.
Homelessness remains in St-Pierre Plamondon’s portfolio. Deputy Premier Catherine Gentilcore was assigned immigration and integration and the government House leader role, CityNews and TVA Nouvelles reported.
TVA Nouvelles reported that Lt.-Gov. Manon Jeannotte did not attend the ceremony at St-Pierre Plamondon’s request and signed the appointment documents from her office.
Élections Québec says it will publish final election data after the judicial recounts.
