Quest Diagnostics paused access to its Quanum Lab Services Manager after learning of unauthorized access, saying it believes some patient records were reached and the number of people involved is unknown.
A filing signed Oct. 22 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says Quest learned of the incident Oct. 21. Some clients use Quanum to submit laboratory test orders and retrieve results. Quest has not disclosed how many patients or records may be involved, and its investigation continues.
Quest said the incident had not materially affected its operations or ability to serve patients. The company said direct customer interfaces and electronic medical records used for orders were unaffected. Its response included notifying federal law enforcement and engaging outside cybersecurity experts. Quest’s incident notice says restoration work is underway but gives no target date.
Fox Business reported that Quest also paused access to Essential Insights and LabHQ as a precaution, and that no data was accessed on either system. The outlet said providers could submit orders on paper or use Quanum eLabs. It reported that Quest expected full functionality to return as soon as Friday, Oct. 23.
A separate 2019 incident involved Quest’s billing collection provider, American Medical Collection Agency. Quest said the agency had reported that information on its affected system related to approximately 11.9 million Quest patients.
