The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported more than $41 billion apiece in interbank rupee swap purchases and sales on Oct. 8, the largest individual entries in its five-day foreign-exchange turnover table.
The central bank released the provisional figures Nov. 5 in a table covering position dates Oct. 5 through 9, 2026. It lists Oct. 8 swap purchases at $41.077 billion and sales at $41.221 billion as separate amounts. The table’s units are millions of U.S. dollars.
Interbank foreign-currency-to-rupee spot activity reached its five-day peaks on Oct. 7. Purchases were $23.091 billion and sales were $21.385 billion, according to the RBI data.
The table divides turnover by market segment and transaction type. It separates merchant activity from interbank activity and lists foreign-currency-to-rupee and foreign-currency-to-foreign-currency transactions across spot, forward and swap categories. It also includes cancellations of merchant forwards. The RBI says it compiles interbank turnover using submissions from both sides of the trades.
TradersTape described amounts from $1.321 billion to $4.225 billion as total daily interbank purchases. In the RBI table, those amounts are listed as merchant foreign-currency-to-rupee forward purchases. Interbank spot purchases, by comparison, ranged from $15.810 billion to $23.091 billion across the five position dates.
The RBI release presents the turnover figures by date, segment and transaction type; it does not identify a cause for the daily movements. The Oct. 8 swap entries are marked provisional.
