ROKFORM opened preorders for an $89.99 case for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, adding protection and mounting options as the handset approaches its scheduled Oct. 23 availability date.
ROKFORM’s product page estimates that orders placed after Oct. 16 will ship by Nov. 13. The company’s Oct. 16 announcement gave an Oct. 30 estimate. The current product page says orders placed by Oct. 16 were estimated to ship by Oct. 30.
ROKFORM says the design reinforces the fold hinge and covers the exterior screen with a glass layer. The company lists a body made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polycarbonate, measuring 4.15 millimeters thick and weighing 86 grams. Its product page gives a separate weight of 91 grams when the magnetic plug is installed.
The product page says ROKFORM’s drop testing reached heights of up to 6 feet under MIL-STD 810G-516.6, the drop-test designation cited by the company. ROKFORM says the case is compatible with its RokLock twist-lock mounts for cars, motorcycles and bicycles, along with compatible magnetic mounts, chargers and accessories.
ROKFORM claims its MAGMAX magnets provide two to three times the holding power of standard cases. The company’s product page describes the magnets as extra-strength but does not give a test method for that comparison.
“Foldable phones present unique challenges,” said Jeff Whitten, ROKFORM’s CEO. ROKFORM said the case builds on its Galaxy Z Fold case line, which the company says it introduced last year.
Apple describes iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. The device has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and U.S. prices start at $1,999. Apple says availability is scheduled to begin Oct. 23.
