Reuters-reported plans for an OpenAI financing would put its valuation above Polymarket’s $1.25 trillion year-end threshold, though the contract relies on a separate private-market price.

Reuters reported Oct. 19, citing people familiar with the discussions, that OpenAI was seeking commitments for a roughly $30 billion round at a potential valuation above $1.4 trillion. The company was trying to line up backing before Anthropic’s expected mid-November public debut, the report said, as both firms approached some of the same investors.

Some investors, Reuters reported, viewed the faster effort as a bid by OpenAI to secure funding that might otherwise go to Anthropic. Reuters also cited OpenAI’s infrastructure funding needs and anticipated comparisons of the companies’ finances as factors behind the timing. The report presented those as investor views and potential motives, not as a confirmed transfer of capital.

Polymarket’s contract asks whether OpenAI reaches $1.25 trillion by Dec. 31, 2026, using the NPM Price reported by Nasdaq Private Market, LLC (NPM). A proposed financing valuation does not by itself determine that measure. For an IPO or direct listing during the contract period, the rules also account for the listing price and subsequent public-market capitalization.

OpenAI announced on March 31 that it had closed a financing round. Investor commitments totaled $122 billion, and the company put the round’s post-money valuation at $852 billion. The completed financing is distinct from the proposed round and from EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of OpenAI and Anthropic contracts as valuation signals, which noted that contract prices do not establish company values.

Polymarket’s rules say the market may remain open until 11:59 p.m. ET Jan. 4, 2027, if relevant NPM data for all business dates has not been published by 1 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2027. The contract’s measurement deadline is Dec. 31.
