SoftBank Group and Abu Dhabi-based MGX are discussing a roughly $30 billion OpenAI financing round, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the talks, as the company seeks fresh capital.
Reuters said the proposed financing could value OpenAI at more than $1.4 trillion, citing two people familiar with the matter. Its sources linked the quick timetable to competition for some of the same investors and said OpenAI wants commitments before Anthropic is expected to enter public markets in mid-November.
OpenAI said March 31 it had closed an earlier round with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion valuation. The company named SoftBank and MGX among the investors that co-led that financing.
SoftBank said Oct. 1 it had completed a separate $30 billion investment in OpenAI, which the Japanese group announced in February. The payment brought SoftBank’s cumulative investment to $64.6 billion and its ownership stake to about 13%, the company said. SoftBank added that senior notes funded the final $10 billion installment.
OpenAI and SoftBank declined to comment to Reuters. MGX did not immediately respond to the news agency’s request for comment. Anthropic’s anticipated mid-November market debut is the next timing marker cited in Reuters’ report.
