A power project in Rigasa, Kaduna State, is adding a 7.5-megavolt-ampere substation and two distribution lines to address about 15 years of inadequate electricity supply, BusinessDay reported Monday.

The planned installation combines a 7.5-MVA injection substation operating at 33/11 kilovolts with an 11-kilovolt line stretching two kilometers and a 33-kilovolt line measuring 1.5 kilometers. The substation and lines are intended to reinforce Rigasa’s distribution network and add capacity for homes, businesses and other electricity users, the report said.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group (BAT-IG) facilitated the project. The Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) is implementing it with the Kaduna State Government, according to BusinessDay.

Kaduna Deputy Gov. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe held the groundbreaking ceremony Friday on behalf of Gov. Uba Sani. She linked better electricity service to business growth, higher output and relief for households, BusinessDay reported.

BAT-IG convener Bamidele Atoyebi said the group acted after Rigasa residents raised ongoing concerns about electricity. He said BAT-IG had supported more than 100 interventions in several sectors. “We will organise, mobilise and act,” Atoyebi said.

Atoyebi also said the work could help local commerce, create economic opportunities and improve safety and living conditions. Those are expected benefits cited by the group’s convener; the report did not provide estimates of how much capacity the project will add.

Among those at the ceremony were NDPHC Executive Director for Networks Bello Babayo Bello, who represented Managing Director and CEO Jennifer Adighije, and Executive Director for Strategy and Commercial Patrick Obahiagbon. Rigasa District Head Mohammed Aminu Idris, Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, and Sen. Abu Ibrahim also attended.

BusinessDay did not report a completion date.
