With no timetable for diplomatic efforts with Iran, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that Washington remains in contact with Tehran while warning of risks to commercial shipping and global supplies.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that Rubio made the remarks to reporters in Atlanta. He said communication includes direct exchanges, though most conversations pass through intermediaries. “Talks have actually never stopped,” he said.

Rubio said President Donald Trump wants diplomacy pursued where possible. Any agreement, he added, would need to protect U.S. national security and address Washington’s main concerns.

He pointed to Iran’s nuclear program and its regional role, which Washington considers destabilizing. Rubio alleged Tehran had attacked commercial vessels, warning that disruption at sea could put cargo traffic and food and energy supplies at risk.

As examples of what he described as regional instability, Rubio cited Iran’s backing of the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon. On Gulf security, he said Washington remains in regular contact with Saudi Arabia and intends to honor its defense agreements.
