Russia has demanded sweeping concessions from Ukraine in peace talks held in Istanbul, insisting on territorial surrender, military restrictions, and political neutrality. According to Russian media, Moscow's formal proposal requires Kyiv to recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea and four eastern regions, withdraw troops, abandon NATO aspirations, and make Russian an official language. Ukraine dismissed the terms as unacceptable, labeling them a disguised surrender.
The one-hour meeting marked only the second round of negotiations since March 2022. While both sides agreed to exchange more prisoners of war and return thousands of fallen soldiers, no ceasefire progress was made. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope for a future summit involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and U.S. President Donald Trump. However, Trump has warned that the U.S. may abandon its mediation role if talks stagnate.
Russia outlined two ceasefire options—either a full Ukrainian withdrawal from occupied territories or a freeze on foreign military aid and domestic mobilization. Both were rejected by Kyiv, which emphasized its own roadmap calling for complete sovereignty, unrestricted military capacity, and reparations from Moscow.
Meanwhile, Ukraine escalated its military efforts with a drone attack targeting Russia’s nuclear-capable bomber fleet in Siberia. The operation, named "Spider’s Web," reportedly caused significant damage and was hailed by Western analysts as one of Ukraine’s boldest strikes. U.S. and UK officials said they were not briefed on the assault beforehand.
Zelenskiy reaffirmed Ukraine’s resistance to ultimatums, stating the country would not yield but remained open to peace. As Russian advances intensify and the risk of nuclear escalation looms, the global spotlight remains fixed on whether diplomacy or firepower will decide the war’s next chapter.
