Russian Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv Kills Two, Damages Maternity Hospital

Russia launched a major missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Thursday, killing two people and damaging residential buildings, medical facilities and other infrastructure across the Ukrainian capital, according to Ukrainian officials. One of those killed was in a parking area near a maternity hospital.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said explosions illuminated the city overnight as residents slept, accusing Russian forces of targeting Kyiv and civilian and energy infrastructure.

Ukraine’s air force said the wider overnight barrage involved 282 drones and other weapons, along with hypersonic and ballistic missiles. Zelenskiy said Kyiv faced three waves of ballistic missiles and that Ukrainian air defenses intercepted about 60% of them.

Officials said eight people were injured. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said part of the maternity hospital’s facade was damaged, along with a nearby diagnostic center. Reports also indicated damage to homes, vehicles, warehouses and other buildings across several districts.

The attack followed sustained Russian drone strikes on Kyiv a day earlier that killed two people and injured dozens, while damaging residential and transport infrastructure.

Zelenskiy, who was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, called for greater international pressure on Moscow and additional air-defense capabilities, particularly systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces struck Ukrainian defense-related facilities, logistics and telecommunications centers, as well as vessels it said were used by Ukraine’s military.

Russian strikes also caused damage in the Black Sea port city of Odesa. Serhiy Lysak, head of the city’s military administration, said medical and educational facilities and nearby residential properties were affected.

The latest attacks come as Russia and Ukraine intensify aerial operations, putting additional pressure on Ukraine’s air-defense network and critical infrastructure.
