U.S. equities finished mixed Tuesday as oil prices retreated and the S&P 500 recovered from an early loss, while the Nasdaq slipped and SpaceX’s companywide results arrived after the close.
The S&P 500 added 21.84 points, or 0.28%, to 7,712.57. The Nasdaq Composite lost 6.07 points, or 0.02%, to 26,424.82, leaving the main U.S. indexes moving in different directions. All three major indexes opened lower as AI-linked shares weakened and oil climbed, Reuters reported.
Front-month Brent crude futures reached $111.99 a barrel before settling at $108.79, down $0.76, or 0.69%, Reuters reported. The news agency said the contract reached a five-month high and linked supply concerns to attacks on Saudi infrastructure. In Paris, France’s CAC 40 fell 0.38% to 7,838.49, according to Euronext.
In a note reproduced by FXStreet, Jim Reid, Deutsche Bank’s Global Head of Macro & Thematic Research, associated the U.S. recovery with easing energy prices after earlier pressure from AI concerns, rising oil prices and worries about French sovereign debt. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also rose 1.02%.
SpaceX’s companywide third-quarter results showed $14.575 billion in revenue and $4.404 billion in net income for the quarter ended Sept. 30. Its Super Intelligence segment reported $7.560 billion in revenue and $16.444 billion in capital expenditure. The filing was submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission at 4:00:51 p.m. ET, after regular trading ended, so it could not have driven the Oct. 20 closing gain. Reuters reported that SpaceX shares rose in after-hours trading.
Meta Platforms, Inc. had projected $130 billion to $145 billion in 2026 capital expenditure, including principal payments on finance leases. Its third-quarter results were scheduled for after the Oct. 21 U.S. close, with a conference call set for 4:30 p.m. ET.
