Sainsbury’s will give investors a fresh look at its grocery strategy in a half-year update scheduled for Oct. 22, as recent merger reports and an agreed Argos sale raise questions about its growth priorities.

The Financial Times reported earlier this month that Sainsbury’s held discussions with Morrisons about a possible merger earlier in 2026. The talks are no longer active, the FT reported. The Independent said the report revived speculation about whether Sainsbury’s might pursue another deal to accelerate growth.

In July, Sainsbury’s agreed to transfer Argos, its general merchandise business, to Swift Partners for at least £120 million. The Independent reported that analysts viewed the sale positively as a way to focus on Sainsbury’s core business. The agreement comes about a decade after Sainsbury’s paid £1.4 billion for Argos.

The retailer has relied on price investment and customer loyalty to support growth in a competitive grocery market, The Independent reported. Worldpanel data cited by the outlet put Sainsbury’s share of the UK market at about 15.3%, compared with 27.9% for Tesco.

A proposed £7 billion tie-up with Asda was stopped by competition regulators in 2019. That earlier deal attempt provides a precedent as investors consider the company’s reported discussions with Morrisons.

Barclays forecast second-quarter sales growth of 2.6%, compared with 3.6% in the first quarter. Its estimate for first-half earnings before interest and tax was about £530 million, 4% above the year-earlier period.

Investors are also seeking guidance on the profit outlook as inflation is expected to rise alongside energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict, The Independent reported. Sainsbury’s is scheduled to issue its half-year update Thursday, Oct. 22.
