Burned remains handed to a Salvadoran team in Haiti may be those of four air force members missing since an ambush, and autopsies are needed to identify them, The New York Times reported.

The newspaper said the condition of the remains prevented identification without autopsies. It cited two people close to the international security mission. A Salvadoran military team arrived in Haiti on Oct. 23 and received the remains at the international airport the next day, the Times reported.

Reuters said it could not immediately confirm the account and reported that the international security mission declined to comment.

Salvadoran officials said the four went missing Oct. 18 while returning to base from a market. Reuters reported that the armored vehicle came under attack and caught fire; the men got out before authorities lost contact.

Reuters said no group had publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. EconoTimes previously reported that fighting had hindered the search.
