Sberbank plans to offer cryptocurrency trading through an existing app in December following its Russian exchange authorization, while individual buyers remain subject to investor rules.
The authorization allows Russia’s largest bank to operate a crypto exchange. Sberbank has not announced that customers can use the proposed trading service. Approval for the exchange operation does not remove the rules that apply to individual purchases.
The planned service would cover Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and Tether (USDT). It would make trading in those assets available within an app the bank already operates.
Under Russian rules, investors without qualified status must pass a test before buying cryptocurrency. They also face a purchase limit, which passing the test does not remove. Those requirements would still apply to purchases through Sberbank’s proposed service.
The bank’s next stated step is a planned December launch of trading through the app.
