India’s Sensex fell 1,452.74 points from its session high on Oct. 21 but closed down 143.21 points after recovering from its low, leaving a much smaller daily loss than the intraday drop.

The index rose 829.29 points, or 1.12%, to 74,682.19 early in trading before falling to 73,229.45. It finished at 73,709.69, down 0.19% from the previous close, BSE data showed. Even after the recovery, the close was 972.50 points below the day’s high.

The Nifty 50 traced a similar course. NSE Indices historical data showed it reached 23,120.90 and fell as low as 22,649.90, a 471-point range. It closed at 22,811.35, down 77.60 points, or 0.34%.

Both benchmarks closed lower despite recovering from their intraday lows.

The National Stock Exchange of India’s provisional report for combined cash trading across NSE, BSE and MSEI showed foreign institutional and portfolio investors bought a net ₹1,022.32 crore on Oct. 21. Domestic institutional investors were net buyers of ₹1,614.32 crore. Those full-session totals do not identify what drove the benchmarks’ retreat from their highs.

Reuters reported Brent futures at $109.64 a barrel before Indian stock trading began and $110.85 after it ended. Its earlier report described risks to regional oil shipments; a later dispatch cited dimmer prospects for U.S.-Iran talks. Neither price quote was taken during the Indian equity session.

The Economic Times reported that investors in Eternal Limited were awaiting its second-quarter results.
