It was recently confirmed that two veteran TV actresses are joining the “Shameless” season 9 cast. Katey Sagal is the next love interest for the dysfunctional patriarch Frank (William H. Macy) while Courtney Cox is a recovering alcoholic who will challenge Lip (Jeremy Allen White).
There is a little over a week left before “Shameless” season 9 airs. But the surprises keep coming. This time, it involves the addition of two cast members who will be affecting the lives of the men in the Gallagher family.
Variety was the first to report on Sagal and Cox’s roles in “Shameless” season 9. Sagal will be playing the recurring role of Ingrid Jones. Sagal’s Ingrid and Frank will first meet in an emergency room, which is funny and crazy enough to fit the kind of romance Frank would pursue. The same report described Ingrid as a “crazed psych patient” and Frank would not seem to mind her condition. Apparently, it is going to be love at first sight for Frank and Ingrid.
Meanwhile, Cox guest stars as Jen Wagner in “Shameless” season 9. The character brings in a textbook Hollywood-star-gone-wild plot, with Wagner as the famous celeb who faces her own demons. Lip, who also had issues with alcohol abuse, is going to spend a lot of time with the actress. It appears that Lip is going to paid by Wagner to simply be by her side as someone who’s so far successful in maintaining his sobriety.
Unfortunately, Lip and Jen are on different stages of being sober. Variety’s report hints that Jen’s sobriety is more unstable and will lead to the two characters’ unusual adventure of finding a cocktail in “Shameless” season 9. It will be interesting to see if Lip cracks because of Jen or if Jen actually finds more motivation to avoid alcohol after spending time with him..
Meanwhile, previous teasers also confirmed that “Shameless” season 9 is going to feature storylines focused on electoral campaigns in the South. In fact, Frank is going to be one of the aspirants running for public office. “Shameless” season 9 premieres on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
