The Afyonkarahisar governor’s office said shootings in three rural villages killed eight people Thursday, while local officials reported that a manhunt was underway for a suspect.

Anadolu state news agency said three people died in each of Kiyir and Ayazini. In Yukaritandir, two women with gunshot wounds were discovered along a village road. Anadolu said they died later at a hospital.

The governor’s office reported one serious injury. Anadolu said an injured person was in critical condition at a hospital, but did not specify where the injury occurred.

Local officials said a manhunt was underway. NTV, a private broadcaster, said police were pursuing a suspect who was seen fleeing the scene in a red car.

AFP said the shootings happened in the evening in countryside near Afyonkarahisar. The town lies between Ankara, Turkey’s capital, and coastal Izmir. Anadolu said Kiyir is roughly a half-hour drive northeast of Yukaritandir, with Ayazini another half-hour farther east by car.
