Shopify has added a buyer-controlled checkout path for compatible AI shopping agents, allowing them to prepare purchases while requiring customer approval of the amount and payment method before an order is placed.
Shop MCP went live Oct. 13. It lets compatible agents search Shopify Catalog without an API key; Shopify says the catalog has more than 1 billion products. Agents can build a cart and open checkout at the merchant’s store. An order cannot be placed until the shopper approves the amount and payment method.
Shopify’s developer changelog says customers can use checkout without signing in. Signed-in shoppers can use saved addresses and Shop Pay. The sign-in condition applies to those saved details, while a buyer’s approval is still required for the purchase.
Shopify said orders created through Shop MCP are listed in the merchant’s admin dashboard alongside other sales. Checkout opens at the merchant’s store, according to the Oct. 13 changelog. The service lets agents handle product search and cart preparation while leaving the order approval with the shopper.
The service follows a June change to developer access. Shopify said developers could use its Catalog API with an API key and did not need prior approval. The newer Shop MCP connection has a different requirement for product search: Shopify says agents can query the catalog without an API key.
Shopify said its earlier shopping flow sent customers to a merchant’s website to pay, where shoppers often dropped out during checkout. The company says the new connection extends the process into checkout at the merchant’s store. Its June announcement also said promoted placements could eventually give developers a way to earn revenue. The service joins catalog discovery with a purchase flow and a potential business incentive for developers who build around the catalog.
