Japan’s SoftBank Group is reportedly exploring an $18 billion acquisition of Allied Universal, a major U.S. security services provider, as billionaire founder Masayoshi Son accelerates investments in artificial intelligence, robotics, and technology infrastructure.

According to a Bloomberg News report published Friday, citing people familiar with the discussions, SoftBank is evaluating a potential takeover of Allied Universal as part of its broader strategy to integrate AI-powered robots into traditional industries.

Allied Universal specializes in providing security personnel for businesses, commercial properties, entertainment venues, and major events. The company has also expanded its presence in the rapidly growing data center industry, offering security services during facility construction and ongoing operations.

The potential acquisition could strengthen SoftBank’s position in the AI infrastructure market while creating opportunities to introduce advanced robotics into commercial security operations.

One person familiar with the discussions reportedly said SoftBank could eventually replace certain human security roles with AI-powered robots. However, another source indicated that deploying humanoid robots capable of performing security duties would likely require additional technological development and time.

The proposed transaction remains in its early stages, with no final agreement reached regarding the acquisition or its valuation. SoftBank declined to comment on the report, while Allied Universal did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

SoftBank has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence as Son seeks to position the Japanese investment conglomerate at the forefront of emerging technologies.

The company is widely recognized for its major technology investments through the Vision Fund. Its portfolio history includes an early investment in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, a controlling stake in semiconductor designer Arm, and substantial financial backing for office-sharing company WeWork.

SoftBank also completed the final phase of its planned $30 billion investment in OpenAI in October, reinforcing its commitment to AI development and commercialization.

An Allied Universal acquisition could provide SoftBank with an established security services network where AI-driven automation and robotics could eventually be deployed at scale.

Nevertheless, the reported $18 billion deal remains uncertain, and discussions could conclude without an acquisition.

If completed, the transaction would represent another significant step in SoftBank’s strategy to connect artificial intelligence, physical robotics, and critical infrastructure services.
