After riots the previous weekend, Sophie Binet, secretary general of France's CGT labor union, called for strikes Wednesday following a meeting with Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, France 24 reported.

Binet told reporters the government had offered “no measure or an acknowledgement of our demands.” France 24 reported that the talks collapsed.

Before the meeting, Lecornu said in a letter that the government should protect the freedom to demonstrate. Binet had argued that officials needed to address protest anger through politics rather than repression, as EconoTimes covered in an earlier report on the government's response to unrest.
